What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a healthcare system that helps people maintain and restore health by offering diagnosis, treatment and prevention for a range of health problems.

Osteopathic practice provides a package of care that can include one or more of the following: manual therapy, health information, self management advice and support, and/or exercise therapy. It is based on the philosophy that the structure and function of the body are intimately related and that the well-being of an individual relies on the arrangement of our body, particularly the musculo-skeletal framework i.e. bones, ligaments, muscles, joints, fascia, that supports the organs that keep us alive. If this framework is out of balance, strained, injured, or has areas of weakness, then it may influence the health of our whole body.

Osteopathic treatment can be given in any number of ways depending upon the situation and the patient's needs at the time. Osteopaths use movement of the human body help restore and maintain normal (or as normal as possible) bodily function. The aim is that this will remove any barriers to healing and help the body 'heal itself'.

Cranial Osteopathy is an example of a technique used that is both subtle and gentle.

Being very gentle Cranial Osteopathy is particularly suited for babies.

During pregnancy osteopathy may help relieve the stresses and strains on your body and after the birth of your child.

It is our aim to spend time with our patients to understand them and then support them through their problem. A initial consultation is usually an hour, with subsequent follow-up appointments of thirty minutes.

Osteopaths are government registered and regulated primary healthcare professionals.

If you would like any more information about any of the above please don't hesitate to contact us and we will be happy to answer your questions.
